In the second of a series of articles celebrating International Nurses Day, we spend five minute with Denise Lansdown about her role at Pilgrims. Denise is a Registered Nurse at Pilgrims Hospice Thanet.
I joined Pilgrim Hospice at Thanet in December 2014 having spent seven and a half years working as a Royal Air Force medic and a further 13 years working with adults with learning difficulties. I decided to undertake a Registered Nurse course with Canterbury Christ Church University and qualified in 2008. After qualifying I worked in community nursing with district nurses for six years.
I know that my work truly makes a difference.
District nursing can be quite solitary but working as part of the wonderful team at Pilgrims is really engaging. As well as nurses there is a whole team of experts supporting the patient and family, all providing the compassionate support that the very vulnerable require. Having the time to care is essential and the hospice environment allows nurses to focus on building this into everyday care for each individual patient.
Sometimes the most challenging part of my role here at Pilgrims Hospice is helping relatives deal with great sadness and stress. We work with a marvellous team of support services who guide those caring for people who are terminally ill.
I use my life skills and abilities to communicate compassionately with people as part of the holistic care delivered here at the hospice. I know that my work truly makes a difference.
